canon g12 description
Advanced amateurs who have overwhelmingly embraced the G Series will be delighted with the PowerShot G11, which features RAW mode for unlimited editing options, a 28mm wide-angle lens, and a 2.8-inch Vari-Angle PureColor System LCD. Add to that Canon’s new High Sensitivity System and high-speed ISO for incredible image quality, and Canon’s top-range compact digital camera is a truly groundbreaking successor.
FEATURES:
- 10-megapixel sensor coupled with Canon’s DIGIC 4 Image Processor – The PowerShot G11 employs a 10-megapixel High Sensitivity System by combining a powerful CCD sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 4 Image Processor. Thanks to this technological advancement, the G11 is dramatically more sensitive than cameras with identical megapixel counts, and delivers spectacular images with minimal noise. Increased sensitivity demands a higher ISO speed, and the PowerShot G11 delivers with a new maximum setting of ISO 3200. Blur and camera shake are notably reduced for the ultimate in sharpness and clarity.
- Full range of shooting and recording modes including RAW + JPEG – The PowerShot G11′s RAW mode lets you shoot images without JPEG compression. It gives you clearer images and complete creative control in editing. RAW images are transferred directly to the computer where they can then be edited using image adjustment software or a processing application to adjust your images as you please. The camera can also be set to allow the simultaneous recording of both RAW and JPEG images while shooting.
- Large, bright 2.8-inch Vari-Angle LCD – The PowerShot G11 gives you a large 2.8-inch PureColor System LCD screen for excellent control when framing your shots. But size is only part of the story. Canon’s PureColor System LCD offers spectacular color, resolution and contrast even at an angle. The screen is durable and easy to see. It is a per

I’m really excited about learning how to take good manual pics, but I’m very sure if I have to carry around a dslr, I just won’t remember to take it with me. What do you think?Answer:

It is a good camera to use to learn manual shooting, but of course the price approaches that of a DSLR and while the image quality on the G series is better than most point and shoots, it still does not approach the image quality of a DSLR.So, in the end, if you want:
Compact, mobile camera = G12
Image quality = DSLRPentax K-r Review

While the G12 is an excellent P&S camera, it is not known for being a fully adjustable camera like a dSLR.
Of course it does have a few drawbacks like not being able to use interchangeable lenses nor do they have full manual controls.
If you keep your dSLR in a backpack, you will eventually always remember to carry it with you.
The G12 is an great camera and it has all the features that you would need to learn manual shooting. The image quality is excellent for a P&S camera. It was designed as a portable camera for advanced photographers. Because the form factor is larger than your standard P&S but much smaller than a DSLR, the controls are easier to manage ( at least for me) than on a comparable Advanced Compact ( S95, LX5, TL500). The only other cameras that wouuld be comparable are:
Nikon P7000
Sony NEX 3 or 5
Olympus E-420 or E-PL1
The Nikon P7000 looks almost the same as the G12. It seems to have a lot a problems though. The NEX 3 and 5 have the highest image quality and most features but has an unusual form factor not everyone likes ( while physically smaller, the lenses stick out in away that makes it seem bigger). The Olympus E-420 and E-PL1 both are slightly larger and will deliver better image quality. I would think they would be the closest competitors.

The Canon G12 is a great camera.
It is a bridge camera so it will provide a lot of manual controls similar to a DSLR, plus it has great image quality and its small so you can carry it around much easily than you would a DSLR.
It will be more discrete than a DSLR in a crowd.
Its got a tilt and swivel LCD screen for over head shots.
Electronic Level function – so you wont get tilted horizons.
Hot shoe for external flashes.
Another great feature is the built in Neutral density filter.

Have fun.
@MisterBokeh yeah, but the P7000 is slow as hell, especially in low light. 5x vs 7x optical zoom is not much of a difference.
nothing new from canon dull marketing to cut the cost.
I just got myself the Coolpix P7000 ….I did heavily lean on the G12 but the 7x optical zoom on the Coolpix got me sold.
does it have time lapse video feature- it’s there on g9, but not on g10 and g11.
Thinking about getting this thing when it’s out but I’m stuck on this and another camera.
